Important Information for Junior Doctor Locums
We have summarised some key points to assist you with making a decision to become a Locum Doctor. You may have many other questions about the different aspects of locum work, so please do not hesitate to contact us. We are more than happy to hear from you, and endeavour to provide you with the best expert advice

1. Requirements to work as a Locum in Australia
To work as a Locum in Australia or New Zealand you must meet the following 2 requirements
• Be a Permanent Resident or Citizen of Australia or New Zealand
• Hold current full general Registration with no restrictions/conditions in Australia or New Zealand

If you do not meet these requirements Wavelength International may still be able to assist you with Permanent/Fixed term positions or migration advice.

For more information please contact Carly Ward on cward@wave.com.au

2. What level of remuneration can I expect?
Locum rates can vary greatly depending on your level of seniority, specialty, hospital location, the amount of responsibility you have, the length of contract and how soon the position is due to start. Generally speaking rural hospitals often pay higher rates than the metropolitan hospitals, particularly if the locum is organised at short notice. On average RMO’s can typically earn anywhere between $80 to $120 per hour and Registrars can earn anywhere between $100 to $150 per hour.

Please note:  These rates are guidelines only, as the locum market can fluctuate and rates are often subject to change.

3. Indemnity

Australia
For locum doctors working as hospital PAYG employees (candidates placed on the hospital payroll), you will be covered by the hospital’s State Medical Indemnity Policy. Some hospitals also offer indemnity cover to Sole Traders and PTY Limited Companies (contractors), for the duration of their locum. Ultimately it is the client’s decision and it is your responsibility to have an understanding of exactly what you are covered for before commencing a position.

Regardless of whether the client provides you with medical indemnity cover for the duration of your locum, Wavelength always strongly recommends that all Locum doctors working in Australia have their own private medical indemnity cover at all times. Medical indemnity in Australia has been in a state of flux in the past few years and litigation has continued to increase. Suffice to say, you must be very clear before you commence your Locum with a client, that you are confident that you have adequate indemnity cover at all times.

New Zealand
All doctors wishing to work in New Zealand must ensure that they have adequate Medical indemnity whilst undertaking Locum work. Medical indemnity cover is a requirement for registration in NZ. Typically medical indemnity costs less in NZ than it does in Australia. This is due to the fact that New Zealand’s Accident Corporation (ACC) has an Accident and Compensation Scheme in place. This provides personal injury cover for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors. In return people do not have the right to sue for personal injury, other than for exemplary damages.
